Recently, our Classic Holidays Accounts Officer, Chloe Dibetta, spent a month in Africa volunteering at an orphanage in Tanzania and an Animal Conservation in South Africa, learning what it truly means to be a Classic Hero.
1. What was your volunteering experience in Africa?
I first flew to Tanzania where I was a volunteer in an orphanage with 23 kids ranging in age from 2 to 7 years old. These kids had either lost one or both parents to HIV, road accidents or other diseases, some lived in the area but with their grandparents and couldn’t afford schooling and some of the kids had been abandon at the orphanage because they had HIV themselves.... Connie Canale – CO.AS.IT.
Connie is a reliable, caring, energetic and compassionate woman who always puts others’ happiness and comfort on the top of her priority list. As a volunteer with CO.AS.IT, Connie has given freely of her time for almost 14 years to be present at Social group on a weekly basis to assist senior citizens. Her commitment to the organisation is exceptional, attending the monthly staff meeting, periodic staff training as well as other functions and events that are held throughout the year. Connie can always be relied upon to visit a client in hospital or in respite care, and is tireless in her efforts to assist the ageing Italian community on the Gold Coast.
Yvonne Collett is a Volunteer at our BreastScreen Service in Southport, located at the Gold Coast University Hospital. Yvonne has been volunteering since 1997, and is responsible for re-assuring women that come into Breastscreen for their mammograms, supporting them and assisting with changing into gowns, offering companionship and refreshments whilst waiting, packing laundry away and tidying the waiting area, and assisting staff. Finding the time as a registered nurse working shifts in hospital emergency wards to volunteer with House With No Steps is just one of the reasons Laura Zipf is a Classic Hero. Working at “Debbie Way”, a disability accommodation service where 3 young ladies are supported who have extremely high needs physically, intellectually, medically and behaviourally, it is a challenging environment and one that Laura has jumped into without hesitation. Joy Maynard – Chaplain, John Flynn Private Hospital
Chaplain Joy has been a volunteer at the John Flynn Private Hospital for almost 20 years, visiting patients and offering much needed comfort. Joy assists in the organisation of remembrance services held twice a year and organises the carols choir each Christmas. She is a dedicated member of the team who has shown great commitment to John Flynn Private Hospital – and her dedication has not waivered despite her 80 + years.
